North Korea fires apparent ballistic missile, not to reach Japan

North Korea fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile on Monday, the Japanese government said, with Japan’s J-Alert early warning system indicating the projectile was unlikely to reach Japan.

The incident came after North Korea notified Japan of a plan to launch a satellite-carrying rocket before June 4, putting the region on high alert.

The Japanese alert system initially triggered an order for people in Okinawa Prefecture to take cover, but it was soon lifted.

The projectile had no impact on Japan’s vicinity, the Japan Coast Guard said, citing information from the Defense Ministry.

NHK footage showed footage of an explosion, with the broadcaster citing a Japanese government official as saying the launch suffered some kind of trouble.

North Korea last launched a reconnaissance satellite in November and has since said it plans to launch three more this year.

It appears to believe that a military reconnaissance satellite is necessary for detecting potential surprise attacks by the United States and South Korea.
