Wadephul visits Japan: key partner in Asia
A meeting with his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya in the capital city Tokyo marked the start of Federal Minister Johann Wadephul’s inaugural visit to Japan. In view of the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip as well as the evolving relations with the USA, Wadephul highlighted the role of cooperation with partners such as Japan that share Germany’s values. He referred to Japan as Germany’s “premium partner” in Asia.
Germany and Japan are expanding their partnership, also in consideration of the fact that China has been acting increasingly aggressively. “If we cooperate, we are able to address the massive challenges our two countries are faced with,” Wadephul said. “We are united by the realisation that freedom, security and prosperity in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region are closely interwoven,” he added.
Planning provides for Wadephul to also meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and a number of ministers in charge of economic matters, as well as for him to give a speech at a peace foundation, during his visit to Tokyo.
