Schneider calls for a fossil fuel phase-out roadmap

As the World Climate Conference is coming to an end, Carsten Schneider is calling for a binding fossil fuel phase-out roadmap. Germany is one of around 30 states who signed a letter to the Presidency in which they threaten to refuse their approval of an outcome that does not include a clear roadmap. Fossil fuels are not mentioned in the current draft. Schneider called for higher reduction targets for major emitters and a binding statement on carbon pricing.

At the same time, Schneider confirmed Germany’s contribution to the new fund for protecting tropical forests. Over the course of ten years, Germany will be making a total of one billion euros available for the Tropical Forest Forever Facility. This contribution will ensure that Germany is involved in decision-making. The fund provides for countries who protect their forests to be rewarded, while fines are to be imposed for deforestation. This will be monitored by means of satellites. Germany also agreed to contribute 60 million euros to the international Adaptation Fund.
