    New Polish President’s inaugural visit to Berlin

    The new Polish President Karol Nawrocki has arrived in Berlin for his inaugural visit. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received his Polish counterpart with military honours outside Bellevue Palace. A meeting with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz for talks is the next item on Mr Nawrocki’s agenda.

    Just before his arrival in Berlin, Karol Nawrocki confirmed the call for Germany to make reparation payments as compensation for the damage suffered during World War II. This demand is particularly popular in Poland’s right-wing conservative circles. The German Federal Government does not see any need for action in this regard, as the issue has been finally settled from a legal point of view.
