Merz: “We are and will remain ready to defend ourselves”

At a joint press conference with António Costa, president of the European Council, Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a statement about the violation of Polish NATO airspace by Russian drones. Merz said that he shared the assessment of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk “that the claims of the Russian government that this was, so to speak, a coincidence or a mistake are not convincing”. Like Tusk, he said that he also regarded the incident as “a very serious threat to peace in all of Europe”.

The Federal Chancellor emphasised: “We are and will remain ready to defend ourselves, and we are and will remain determined to significantly increase the defence readiness and defence capabilities of the European part of NATO.”
