Germany supports Morocco with post-earthquake reconstruction

erlin/Marrakech (d.de)- In Marrakech, Germany’s Development Minister Svenja Schulze has announced an initial reconstruction package for those affected by the earthquake in Morocco. “The earthquake hit one of the country’s poorest regions in the Atlas Mountains. Many people died, while others face ruins and have to laboriously build up new livelihoods for themselves. Following the initial phase of emergency aid, it is now a question of reconstruction,” said Schulze.

A large part of the reconstruction aid of ten million euros is to be used to rebuild houses in the Atlas Mountains. The new houses are to be better equipped to withstand earthquakes and the impacts of climate change. Additional funding is to help those affected by the earthquake to rebuild their micro enterprises. 100 mobile sanitation facilities for emergency shelters and, ahead of the winter, ovens for 500 families are to be made available from ongoing projects. While visiting Morocco to take part in the World Bank/IMF meeting in Marrakech, which will also be attended by German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, Schulze will talk to Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Finance Minister Fettah Alaoui about further support with reconstruction.
