    Germany inaugurates Europe’s fastest computer

Europe’s fastest computer, the world’s fourth-fastest computer and the most energy-efficient computer ever -superlatives abound as Jupiter is inaugurated.

Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Hendrik Wüst, the state premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, have inaugurated Europe’s fastest computer. Known as “supercomputer Jupiter”, it is situated at Forschungszentrum Jülich near Aachen. Merz said that it opened up “completely new possibilities – from training AI models to scientific simulations”. The computer, which is the fourth-fastest in the world, underlined Germany’s ambition to play a leading role in the technological revolution of our time, he added.

Because it is run on green electricity, Jupiter is said to be the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer. Astrid Lambrecht, head of Forschungszentrum Jülich, told the German Press Agency that it was this that made it unique. “At a time when digitalisation and AI are requiring more and more energy, we are using Jupiter to show what the path towards resource-saving computing can look like.”
