EU leaders discuss drone defence and assistance for Ukraine

Against the backdrop of recent airspace violations by Russian fighter jets and kamikaze drones, EU heads of state and government are today discussing joint efforts to improve deterrence and defence. Plans are already on the table for a “drone wall” that would detect, track and intercept unmanned aircraft.

Support for Ukraine is another of the subjects to be discussed. Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have proposed using frozen Russian central bank funds to provide Ukraine with additional loans.

It remains to be seen whether Denmark will succeed in averting any major disruptions during the summit. Since last week, there have been repeated drone alerts in the country. It has not been ascertained who is behind the incidents. The German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, are helping to protect the summit. Among other things, the Bundeswehr has sent the frigate “Hamburg” to Copenhagen. The vessel is specially equipped for air defence and has radar capable of detecting more than 1,000 targets at once.
