Development Minister welcomes World Bank reforms

Marrakesh (dpa/d.de) Germany’s Development Minister Svenja Schulze has welcomed reforms to the World Bank which aim to increase investments in climate protection and global health in poorer countries. “It puts the World Bank in the position to deal with current challenges,” said Schulze. “In the 21st Century you can only fight poverty if you protect the natural resources which sustain life at the same time.” Schulze observed that the World Bank would in future play a bigger part in delivering the global energy transition, preventing the next pandemic, or protecting rainforests. At the World Bank’s annual meeting in Marrakesh in Morocco, shareholders presented a new mission statement. Fighting poverty remains the goal, the new statement adds the wording “on a livable planet”.
