Bundestag commemorates the Srebrenica massacre

Berlin (dpa) – 30 years after the genocide in Srebrenica, the Bundestag has commemorated the victims. “Srebrenica was the worst war crime committed on European soil since the Second World War,” said Bundestag President Julia Klöckner at the start of an hour-long debate on the topic. The genocide was also a failure on the part of the United Nations, she added, since its peacekeeping troops did not succeed in protecting those seeking refuge. In May 2025, the United Nations General Assembly declared 11 July to be a “Day of Reflection and Remembrance”.
On 11 July 1995, during the Bosnian War, Bosnian Serb forces captured the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica, which had been designated a UN safe area. That day and in the days that followed, around 8,000 people were murdered – the majority of them men and teenage boys. Women, girls and children were deported to territory controlled by the Bosnian army.
