Defence summit in Sydney cancelled over concerns about planned protests
A major defence industry event due to be held in Sydney this week has been cancelled following safety concerns about planned protests.
The New South Wales Defence Summit was scheduled to be held on Thursday in the city’s central business district but organisers Informa Connect Australia today announced it was not going ahead.
The decision to scrap the summit comes after violent protests on the streets of Melbourne last month when the city hosted the Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition.
Twenty-seven police officers were injured and more than 42 people were arrested when About 1500 demonstrators descended on the city to protest.
Police horses were also reportedly punched and bins were lit on fire.
The expo was organised before Israel’s invasion of Gaza after the October 7 Hamas attacks last year, but the war appeared a major factor in the protests, with many demonstrators waving Palestinian flags.
Companies due to attend this week’s NSW Defence Summit included giant US defence contractor Lockheed Martin and Australian company Droneshield, which makes anti-drone technology.
Groups such as Students for Palestine last week announced they planned demonstrations outside its venue, the Swissotel, in the Sydney CBD, to protest against what they described as the “Australian war machine”.
