A shocking plot to hijack a commercial jet at an Australian airport has been uncovered by the Australian Federal Police.
A shocking plot to hijack a commercial jet at an Australian airport and force it to fly to a hostile Middle Eastern nation has been uncovered.
The report, first covered by The Australian, said the Australian Federal Police and a counter-terrorism taskforce are investigating the foiled plan.
One person has been arrested and remains in custody, with authorities stressing there is no ongoing threat.
“This matter is before the court, with open-source reporting on this individual’s court case in July 2025. Suppression orders remain in place,” the AFP said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reportedly been briefed on the case, as authorities examine whether anti-Semitic or pro-Middle Eastern motives were behind the alleged plot.
The alleged plan involved refuelling the aircraft mid-journey from Australia to the Middle East. Questions remain over how advanced the plan actually was.
Pilot David Oliver described the alleged plot as unrealistic.
“It’s quite bizarre, is the word that I would use,” Oliver told Sunrise this morning.
