The Art of War
“If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be put at risk even in a hundred battles. If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose, if you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself. If you know both yourself and your enemy, you can win numerous (literally, “a hundred”) battles without jeopardy.”The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military book dating from the Spring and Autumn Period (roughly 771 to 476 BC). For almost 1,500 years it was the lead text in an anthology that would be formalized as the Seven Military Classics by Emperor Shenzong of Song in 1080. The book is composed of 13 chapters. Each chapter explained the different aspect of warfare and how that applies to military strategy and tactics. This book remains the most influential strategy text in East Asian warfare. It has an extreme influence on both Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. The Art of War appears the bibliographical catalogs of the Chinese dynastic histories, but listings of its divisions and size varied widely.
There are 13 chapters in this book. The description of each chapter: Detail Assessment and Planning explores the five fundamental factors (the Way, seasons, tract of land, leadership, and management and seven elements that determine the outcomes of military engagements.. Waging War explains how to understand the economy of warfare and how success requires winning decisive engagements quickly. This section informs that successful military campaigns require limiting the cost of competition and conflict. Strategic Attack defines the source of strength as unity, not size, and discusses the five factors that are: Attack, Strategy, Alliances, Army, and Cities. Disposition of the Army teaches commanders the importance of recognizing strategic opportunities and teaches not to create opportunities for the enemy. Forces advise how the use of creativity and timing in building an army’s momentum. Weaknesses and Strengths explain how an army’s opportunities come from the openings in the environment caused by the relative weakness of the enemy and how to react to changes in the fluid battlefield over a given terrain. Military Maneuvers explains the dangers of direct conflict and how to win those confrontations when they are forced upon the commander. Variations and Adaptability explain the need for flexibility in an army’s responses. It explains how to react to shifting circumstances successfully. Movement and Development of Troops explain the different situations in which an army finds itself as it moves through new enemy domains, and how to respond to these situations. This section also focuses on evaluating the intentions of others. The terrain looks at the three general areas of resistance (distance, dangers, and barriers) and the six types of ground positions that arise from them. That offers certain advantages and disadvantages. The Nine Battlegrounds focus on the nine common stages in a campaign, from scattering to deadly, and focus that a commander will need in order to successfully navigate them. Attacking with Fire describes the general use of weapons and the specific use of the environment as a weapon. This section examines the five targets for attack, the five types of environmental attack and the appropriate responses to such attacks. Intelligence and Espionage explain the five types of intelligence sources and how to best manage each of them. This section focuses on the importance of developing good information sources.
The Art of War has been applied to many fields inside and outside of the military. The strategies of deception from The Art of War force the enemy to take strength for weakness, and weakness for strength, and thus will turn his strength into a weakness. Across East Asia, The Art of War was part of the syllabus for the candidates of military service examinations. As such, it has found application as a training guide for many competitive endeavors that do not involve actual combat. Many entrepreneurs and corporate executives have turned to it for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive business situations. Many books have applied the lessons taken from the art of war for teaching corporate business strategies and tactics. The book has also been applied to the field of education. The Art of War has been the subject of legal books and legal articles on the trial process, including negotiation tactics and trial strategy.
Sun Tzu’s was initially written for military use, but its pearls of wisdom regarding strategy and psychology can help anyone accomplish virtually any task. It teaches that Don’t just wander along with your head in the clouds, lives actively and purposefully. Make conscious decisions that shape our lives and direct our path the way we want it to go. Think about the situation in terms of psychological warfare. If there is a goal that we are trying to reach or someone in our life that we are trying to out-smart, then The Art Of War applies to us. It’s all about strategy. Whether our target is a person or an idea, we want to identify the weak points. Knowing the faults of the force that opposes us will let us know how best to exploit them. Doing the unexpected is also always in our favor. Think about the job. If we want to be successful, we need to go out of our way to impress. The strategy requires thinking things out ahead of time. We have to anticipate all the various possible outcomes. Anticipate where things can go wrong and be ready for those scenarios. It will be harder for life to knock us down when we’re ready for pretty much anything. Maintaining a consistent level of passion, dedication, and drive is crucial to the success of any effort, be it actual warfare or the struggle of advancing in your professional life. If we want to rise up in the ranks, we have to keep ourselves motivated and maintain our spirit. In short, The Art of war in favor of that we set ourselves up in a position where it is impossible to lose. This has to do with our calculations pre-battle. The smart planner has a plan of action that will lead to success. It is this kind of knowledge and resourcefulness that can help us with something like building up our own business.
